Boing!
I hit the ground and my whole body springs back up. I land safely on my feet and my hair falls in front of my face. I can see through my bouncy, dark curls and it would appear all the fancy gold clasps that were holding it in place have fallen out by the sheer force of my springy impact upon the glassy ground.
âKate!â Dillon calls my name. âAre you all right?â
âIâm fine!â I fling my head up and my curls whip back. âI fell!â I shout. âWe fell! We bounced!â
âI know, right?â Dillon is wringing his hands nervously. âThat was some crazy shit!â
âHell yeah it was!â
âWhere have you been?â A male voice booms.
Oh no. My extra heads are back. Or were they ever gone? Heraâs head starts talking too. âWhat did you see inside that city?â It says.
âWhoâs talking?â This question is from Dillon.
âYou can hear them?â I ask him.
âHe can hear us?â Hera says.
âI can hear other voices, Kate.â Dillon steps closer to me. âBut I donât see your mouth moving.â
I nod my original head. âYeah, those are my two extra heads I told you about.â
âI thought you were joking.â
âI thought you might have thought that.â
âSo, young mortal,â Zeusâ head speaks loudly again. At this rate I might go deaf in my right ear. âYou can hear us, but not see us, correct?â
Dillon scratches the back of his neck. He looks very uncomfortable. âMortal?â He replies. âYeah, I can hear you, but I donât see any heads other than Kateâs beautiful one.â
I think Heraâs head just gasped at Dillonâs comment on the appearance of mine. âYes, he obviously canât see me.â She hisses.
Hello, jealousy.
âWhere is our son?â Zeus bellows.
âSo you have two extra invisible heads.â Dillon mumbles.
âYou mean Jason?â I ask, still fizzle-brained after boinging off the ground.
âOf course he means Jason.â The Hera Head snaps. âHave you forgotten about my son so easily, Kate?â
âWhat? Oh no.â I stumble over my words. I stop looking at Dillon and zone in on reality. If you can call the strange place weâre in realistic. âI donât know where Jason is. We were up there.â I crane my neck back and so does Dillon. âWe saw a floating mountain andââ
âYou saw Mount Olympus?â Zeus Head interrupts.
âKate,â Hera Head says. âYou need to find Jason now.â
âThat blonde kid? Heâs in there.â Dillon points at the glass city. He still looks mighty confused about the voices emanating out the sides of my head. At least his response was coherent.
âSo is my friend Shana!â I hurry toward the glass city.
âHold up!â Dillon shouts and runs after me. âAre you sure you want to go back in there?â
âWhat is in there?â Hera Head whispers.
âPersephone and Hades.â As soon as I say this my body solidifies. Iâm halted in my tracks and I canât move.
âZeus!â Hera Head shouts. âRelease her at once or you will drain your powers.â
Dillon almost collides into the back of me. He stops and comes around to face me. Iâm posed like a runner who is paused in mid-run.
